Baba knows that he will not be able to provide Amir with the same standard of life as he had in Afghanistan. However, he knows that his future will be better off in America and that is why Amir refers to it as his "last gift". Hosseini foreshadows that life in America will be hard work and not as luxurious as it used to be in Afghanistan. The roles of dependency definitely change after the move to America. Amir is forced to grow up as he knows the language and is able to get an education. It is finally shown that Amir is not as dependent on Baba and in a way Baba is now dependent on him.
